Homemade cashew butter is really easy to make, taste delicous, and then it’s a lot cheaper than the premade version you find in most stores.
This is one of the reasons I normally make my own; here in Denmark premade cashew butter costs almost four times as much as peanut butter.
To make it you can use both raw and roasted cashew nuts, it depends on your taste preferences and how you want to use it. I normally make raw cashew butter with unroasted nuts as I like the taste of it a lot. The unroasted version also fits best with many of the things I use cashew butter for (see below).
However, you can also try making it with salted nuts and see which version you like the best.
In regards to machines, you can use both a high speed blender, food processor or mini chopper to make it. Sometimes I’ve also used my coffee grinder if I only needed a small amount. That said I find it easier to make cashew butter in a food processor or mini chooper, but it can be done in a blender as well. I’ve used both many times.
Ways you can use your homemade cashew butter
There’s many different ways you can use homemade cashew butter. You can enjoy it alone like you would with peanut butter, use it as spread on bread and crackers, in your smoothies, soups, or mix it with water to make cashew milk. You can also add it on top of your favorite fruit bowl (e.g. acai bowl), make it into ice cream or turn it into frosting e.g. for carrot cake or muffins.

How to make Cashew Butter – Cashew Butter Recipe
Depending on the type of blender, food processor or mini chopper you use, it will take some time (10-20 mins) for the cashews to turn into cashew butter so you need a little patience. Your machine will highly likely also need a few breaks in between so it doesn’t overheat, so the total time will be a bit more.
In the beginning the cashew flour/paste will stick to the side of your blender or food processor, and you’ll have to stop the machine and scrape it down several times before it get’s smooth enough for the blender/food processor to keep spinning it around.
Just keep blending and the nuts will eventually turn into a most delicious smooth nut paste. And when this happens, you’ll be glad you took the time to make it.
Below you can see how it looked a while ago when I made raw cashew butter in a small food processor. The first picture was after I blended the cashews for about 30sec-1 min. It took around 10 mins for the cashews to turn into a smooth cashew butter (last picture).
Today I have another machine, a mini-chopper which can only run for 15-20 sec at a time, so the process takes a bit longer. The other day it took around 20 minutes to make a portion of cashew butter, + breaks in between.
- 2 cups (250 g) raw or roasted cashews
- Add the cashews to a high speed blender or food processor and blend. After a few minutes the cashews turn into a paste that starts to stick to the sides.
- When the blender starts spinning without being able to reach the paste, stop it and scrape down the paste from the sides. Then blend again. You will need to repeat this several times.
- When the paste gets smooth enought for the blender to keep spinning, continue to blend until you have a creamy cashew butter*. Remember to give the machine some breaks so it doesn't overheat.
- Store your homemade cashew butter in an airtight glass jar. Last many months.
