If you prefer to buy mainly or solely organic products, including food and cloth, Hamburg is a great city to visit. Here you can find bio supermarkets where every food item is organic, organic clothing store with only organic clothing on the cloth rails and several bio restaurants with organic food on the menu.
In this mini travel guide for Hamburg, I’ll cover the area of Ottensen (15mins in S-train from Hamburg central station) which has a lot to offer when it comes to organic food and shopping. If you cannot make it to Ottensen, several of the places I highlight below, can also be found other places in Hamburg.
Note: as opening hours and days can vary from season to season and year to year, it’s a good idea to double check the opening hours I mention below, so you don’t meet a locked door.
Organic Food, Clothing and Products in Hamburg, Ottensen
In the area of Ottensen you can find Schanzenstern, one of Hamburgs few certified bio restaurants (it’s also a eco-friendly hotel), Marlowe Nature – an organic clothing store, Alnatura – an organic supermarket and Weltladen – a boutique with a large variety of fair trade and bio products (including some pretty cool bags).
All these 4 places are in walking distance from each other and close to the S-bahn (Hamburg-Altona station), making it convenient if you are travelling without a car. Below you can read about the different places, what they offer and where to find them.
If you are looking for more bio restaurants and stores in Hamburg, then check out my post: a taste of the bio restaurants in Hamburg which covers the area of St. George (close to Hamburg central station).
Bio Restaurant Schanzenstern
At the bio restaurant Schanzenstern all the food is certified organic (bio) which makes it easy to order as you do not have to look for what is organic on the menu. As a bonus, a big part of their food is also fair trade certified.
The restaurant, which is connected to the hotel of same name, is just a few minutes walk from Altona S-bahn station. The hotel is nice and very affordable (single room from 49 Euro). I’ve stayed there once, and enjoyed the bio breakfast which was around 8.5 Euro.
Prices: Breakfast: 8.5 Euro, Lunch: 3-11 Euro. Adress: Kleine Rainstraße 24-26, 22765. Phone: +49 (0) 40 – 39 91 91 91 Web: www.schanzenstern.com
Marlowe Nature – Organic Clothing Store
If you like to wear organic clothes, you’ll love Marlowe Nature as everything in here is organic, and mostly also fair trade certified.
The main store (not in Ottensen) has existed since 1992 and today Marlowe Nature has three organic clothing stores in Hamburg. The store in Ottensen where the pics above is taken from, is the smallest of the stores, but the selection is still big as all the clothing is organic. You can also shop at Marlow Natures online store.
The two other stores lies close to each other which is pretty convenient as one of them is a Men&Sports and the other a clothing store for women. I’ve visited both stores with my boyfriend in the summer of 2017. The mens store is the first and so far only organic clothing store for men in Germany.
Adress in Ottensen: Bahrenfelder Str. 176 – Open:Mon –Fri: 11am – 7.30pm Sat: 11am– 4 pm. For more info + addresses for the other stores click here.
Weltladen – Fair trade & Bio Butique
In this boutique you’ll find a mix of different bio and fair trade products including home decoration, organic speciality foods like chocolates and wines, scarfs and different bags made from recycled materials.
The store also has two unique products that I cover in my winter favorites, 7 green and organic products to look for: the beautiful certified organic backpack from Melawear and the cool organic re-usable e-coffee cup you can use for your take-away coffee, tea or matcha latte.
The store is connected to Marlowe Nature organic clothing store which I mention above, and has the same address and opening hours.

Alnatura – Bio Supermarket
In this organic supermarket, every food item you’ll find on the shelves are certified organic. The store pretty much offers the same as any other supermarkets, including: lots of fresh produce, cold and frozen products, dry and canned foods and a small bakery section. It also has a non-food area with mainly eco friendly products including: kitchen items, clothing, make-up and self care products.
The facts that it’s all organic food products makes it really easy to shop as you do not to have to look for organic certifications knowing that whatever you put down in your basket is organic.
Besides from the store in Ottensen, you can find Alnatura three other places in Hamburg (see locations and opening hours here).
Address in Altona (there’re two stores in Altona): 1. Hahnenkamp 1 (Bahnhof Altona). 22765 Hamburg – Open: 8am-8pm 2. Bahrenfelder Str. 242 – 244, 22765 Hamburg – Open: 8am-8pm.
