This creamy matcha smoothie gives you all the benefits from the matcha green tea plus a load of nutrients that your body will love. It’s rich in protein and fiber and only has the sugar content of one piece of fruit so your blood sugar will not sky-jump.
Taste-wise, it’s a delicious blend of avocado, cashew, banana, vanilla & date with a mild touch of matcha-flavour. As it only contains a little amount of fruit (to keep the sugar content low), I’ve added stevia drops to kick up the sweetness. If you don’t have stevia you can add in extra banana or date, or exchange the cashew and water with a sweet plant based milk like oat or rice milk.
Health-wise, one smoothie gives you 10g of protein, 8g of dietary fiber (25% of RDI) and lots of powerful antioxidants from the matcha. At the same time it only has 11g of sugar which is the same as you’d find in 1 medium sized apple or orange.
It’s perfect to kickstart your day as matcha is known for its ability to improve focus and alertness with its unique combination of caffeine and the amino acid l-theanine (1).
On the other hand, you might want to avoid matcha to late in the day as it does have a fairly high amount of caffeine that could potentially keep you awake after bedtime. (Unless you are planning to stay up late – then drink away!).
Tips for extra nutrition:
- If you want to lower the sugar content even more, you can skip the date and add in a few more stevia drops (this will lower the total sugar content to 6g).
- If you want more protein, add a scoop of your favorite protein powder.
Enjoy!
- 1,5 cup (350 ml) of water*
- 20 g of cashews or almonds*
- 10 g of hemps seeds (can be excluded)
- ½ avocado (around 50 g)
- 30 g of frozen banana
- 1 date (7 g)
- 10 drops of stevia**
- ½ tsp matcha (1g)
- ¼ tsp vanilla powder
- 6-7 ice cubes
- Blend the cashews with the water until you have a white cashew milk OR add 300ml of premade cashew milk or another plant based milk to the blender.
- Add all the other ingredients, except the ice cubes, and blend it together.
- Add the ice cubes to the blender and give it a quick blend so the ice cubes get crushed into pieces.
- Serve in a glass and enjoy!
** if you don't have stevia you can add in more banana or a few more date to count for the missing sweetnes-effect of stevia. Note however that this will raise the sugar content of the smoothie.
